He was a pioneer on the alto saxophone, and his arrangements for big bands like Fletcher Henderson's shaped the swing style. Throughout his career, he collaborated with notable musicians such as Ben Webster, Frank Rosolino, and André Previn. His 1958 album "Jazz Giant" is considered a classic in the jazz genre. Carter received multiple Grammy Awards and was recognized as an NEA Jazz Master.
