Charles McPherson is an American jazz alto saxophonist born in Joplin, Missouri, and raised in Detroit, Michigan. From 1960 to 1974, he collaborated with Charles Mingus and later led his own groups. In 2024, he released the album "Reverence" under Smoke Sessions Records, recorded live at Smoke Jazz Club in New York City. The album is dedicated to his mentor Barry Harris and features tracks like "Surge" and "Ode to Barry". McPherson is known for his contributions to the bop and post-bop genres, with his music influenced by Charlie Parker and Johnny Hodges.
