Franz Welser-Möst is an Austrian conductor who has served as the music director of the Cleveland Orchestra since 2002. He conducted the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concerts in 2011, 2013, and 2023. His recording of Franz Schmidt's Symphony No. 4 received the Gramophone Award for Best Orchestral Recording. In 2023, he underwent surgery to remove a cancerous tumor and canceled his conducting engagements from late October through the end of the year. Despite this, his doctors anticipate a full recovery.
