Gaspare Spontini was an Italian composer known for his operas during the late Classical and early Romantic periods. Born in 1774 in Maiolati, he studied music in Naples. His most notable works include the operas "La Vestale" (1807), "Fernand Cortez" (1809), and "Olimpie" (1819). Spontini's music is characterized by dramatic orchestrations and an innovative approach to opera form. He served as a court composer at the Prussian court and had a significant influence on the development of French grand opera. He died in 1851 in his hometown of Maiolati.
