Jen Shyu is an American experimental jazz vocalist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist born in Peoria, Illinois, to Taiwanese and East Timorese parents. She has studied traditional music and dance in countries such as Cuba, Taiwan, Brazil, China, South Korea, East Timor, and Indonesia. Her 2015 album "Sounds and Cries of the World" received critical acclaim and was listed among the best albums of the year by The New York Times and The Nation. She has collaborated with artists like Steve Coleman, Mark Dresser, and Tyshawn Sorey. In 2019, she was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship for music composition.
