Karat is a German rock band founded in 1975 in East Berlin. Their second album, "Über sieben Brücken" (1979), features the hit "Albatros" and the title track, later popularized by Peter Maffay. The 1982 album "Der blaue Planet" sold over 1.3 million copies, becoming the best-selling album by an East German artist. The band received the National Prize of the GDR for Arts and Literature in 1984. After the death of lead singer Herbert Dreilich in 2004, his son Claudius Dreilich took over as lead vocalist. Karat continues to be active, releasing new albums.
