After moving to Chicago in the 1990s, he became a key figure in the local music scene. In 1993, he released his debut album "Big Head Eddie". In 1999, he was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship for his contributions to music. Vandermark is recognized for his complex compositions that blend intricate orchestration with passionate improvisation.
