Lester Bowie was an American jazz trumpeter and composer, known for his involvement in the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians and as a co-founder of the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Born in Bartonsville, Maryland, he grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1967, he released the album "Numbers 1 & 2," which was the first release on the Nessa label and the first recording of the quartet that later became known as the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Bowie was known for his experimental approach to jazz and collaborated with various artists, including Fela Kuti and David Bowie. He passed away in 1999 in Brooklyn, New York.
