Liz Phair is an American singer-songwriter born in New Haven, Connecticut, and raised in the Chicago area. After graduating from Oberlin College in 1990, she began recording songs under the name Girly-Sound, leading to a contract with the independent label Matador Records. Her 1993 debut album, "Exile in Guyville," received critical acclaim and was ranked among Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. She followed with "Whip-Smart" (1994) and "Whitechocolatespaceegg" (1998). In 2003, she released "Liz Phair," featuring the single "Why Can't I?" which reached number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100.
