Mercyful Fate is a Danish heavy metal band formed in 1981 in Copenhagen by vocalist King Diamond and guitarist Hank Shermann. Their debut album, "Melissa," was released in 1983, followed by "Don't Break the Oath" in 1984. After disbanding in 1985, the group reunited in 1992 and released additional albums, including "In the Shadows" (1993) and "9" (1999). Known for their lyrics about Satanism and the occult, Mercyful Fate is considered a pioneer of the first wave of black metal. Their music has influenced many thrash and death metal bands.
