Merle Haggard was an American country singer, songwriter, and musician, known for his contributions to the Bakersfield sound genre. After his release from prison in 1960, he began recording with Tally Records and achieved his first national hit in 1964 with "Sing a Sad Song." Throughout his career, he had 38 number-one hits on the U.S. country charts, including "Mama Tried" and "Okie from Muskogee." Haggard received numerous accolades, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006, and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1994.
