Midwife is the musical project of American singer and multi-instrumentalist Madeline Johnston. Johnston began her career under the names Mariposa and Sister Grotto, debuting as Midwife in 2017 with the album "Like Author, Like Daughter". This was followed by "Forever" (2020), "Luminol" (2021), and "No Depression in Heaven" (2024). Her music, which she describes as "heaven metal", combines elements of slowcore, shoegaze, dream pop, ambient, and drone. She has collaborated with artists such as Vyva Melinkolya, Allison Lorenzen, and members of American Culture. In 2025, she was an artist-in-residence at the Roadburn Festival.
