Natalie Merchant is an American singer-songwriter who began her career in 1981 as the lead vocalist and lyricist for the band 10,000 Maniacs. After leaving the group in 1993, she released nine solo albums, including "Tigerlily" (1995), "Ophelia" (1998), and "Motherland" (2001). Merchant is known for her alternative rock and folk style and has collaborated with artists such as Billy Bragg, Gavin Bryars, and The Chieftains. Her album "Tigerlily" achieved five-times platinum certification in the United States. Merchant also served on the New York State Council on the Arts and was appointed to the Board of Trustees of the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.
