New Riders of the Purple Sage is an American country rock band formed in 1969 by John Dawson and Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead. The original lineup included David Nelson (guitar), Mickey Hart (drums), and Phil Lesh (bass). In 1971, Garcia and Lesh departed, replaced by Buddy Cage (pedal steel guitar) and Dave Torbert (bass). The band released over 12 albums, including "New Riders of the Purple Sage" (1971) and "The Adventures of Panama Red" (1973). Their music blends country and rock elements. They collaborated with members of the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane. In 2002, they received a Lifetime Achievement Award from High Times magazine.
