Nikki Giovanni was an American poet, writer, and activist, born on June 7, 1943, in Knoxville, Tennessee. She graduated from Fisk University in 1967 with a degree in history. A prominent member of the Black Arts Movement, her works often explored themes of race, gender, and politics. Notable poetry collections include "Black Feeling, Black Talk" (1968) and "Those Who Ride the Night Winds" (1983). Giovanni received numerous awards, including the Langston Hughes Award and seven NAACP Image Awards. She served as a professor of English at Virginia Tech from 1987 until her retirement in 2022. She passed away on December 9, 2024, in Blacksburg, Virginia.
