Reverend Gary Davis was an American blues and gospel singer and guitarist, known for his unique fingerpicking style. Born in Laurens, South Carolina, he was blind since infancy. In the 1930s, he performed in the Piedmont blues scene of Durham, North Carolina. Later, he became a Christian minister and moved to New York, where he experienced a career revival during the American folk music movement of the 1960s. His most notable recordings include "Samson and Delilah" and "Death Don't Have No Mercy". Davis's style influenced many musicians, including Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead.
