Rudolf Serkin was an Austrian-American pianist born in 1903 in Eger, then part of Austria-Hungary. Recognized as a child prodigy, he debuted with the Vienna Philharmonic at age 12. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, he performed across Europe, often collaborating with violinist Adolf Busch, whose daughter Irene he later married. In 1939, Serkin emigrated to the United States, becoming head of the piano department at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and later its director. In 1951, he co-founded the Marlboro Music School and Festival in Vermont. Renowned for his interpretations of Beethoven and Brahms, Serkin received honors such as the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1963) and the National Medal of Arts (1988).
