Sheila Jordan was an American jazz singer and songwriter, renowned for her innovative approach to vocal jazz. Born in Detroit, she began her career in the 1940s. In 1963, she released her debut album, "Portrait of Sheila," under Blue Note Records, one of the few vocal albums on the label at that time. Jordan was a pioneer in bebop and scat singing, often performing with only an upright bass as accompaniment. Throughout her career, she collaborated with notable musicians such as Steve Swallow and Carla Bley. In 2012, she was honored as an NEA Jazz Master. She passed away on August 11, 2025, in New York City.
