Sir John Barbirolli was a British conductor and cellist, best known as the long-time conductor of the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester, where he served from 1943 until his death in 1970. Prior to that, he was the music director of the New York Philharmonic from 1936 to 1943. Barbirolli was renowned for his interpretations of works by English composers such as Elgar, Delius, and Vaughan Williams, as well as those by Mahler and Sibelius.
