cd - Sun Ra and His Arkestra
Sun Ra and His Arkestra is an American jazz ensemble formed in the mid-1950s by pianist and composer Sun Ra. The group is renowned for its pioneering approach to afrofuturism and experimental jazz. Notable albums include "Jazz in Silhouette" (1959), "Super-Sonic Jazz" (1957), and "The Heliocentric Worlds of Sun Ra, Volume One" (1965). Following Sun Ra's death in 1993, saxophonist Marshall Allen, a member since 1958, assumed leadership. The Arkestra is known for its dynamic live performances that blend swing, rock 'n' roll, Chicago blues, and electronic elements, with members donning elaborate capes and sequined headdresses.
