The Big Bopper, born Jiles Perry Richardson Jr., was an American musician and disc jockey best known for his 1958 hit "Chantilly Lace." Born in Sabine Pass, Texas, he began his career as a DJ at KTRM radio. In addition to his own work, he wrote songs like "White Lightning" for George Jones and "Running Bear" for Johnny Preston. Richardson tragically died in a plane crash on February 3, 1959, alongside Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens, an event known as "The Day the Music Died."
