The Roots is an American hip-hop band formed in 1987 by Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter and Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson in Philadelphia. They are known for their jazzy and eclectic approach to hip-hop, utilizing live musical instruments. Notable albums include "Do You Want More?!!!??!" (1994), "Things Fall Apart" (1999), and "Phrenology" (2002). In 2000, they won a Grammy Award for the song "You Got Me" featuring Erykah Badu.
