The Silent Jazz Ensemble is a German jazz group founded in 1984 in Berlin by Helmut Engel-Musehold, Gebhard Ullmann, and Volker Heller. Their debut album was released in 1989 and became one of the first jazz bestsellers in unified Germany. The group released two more albums, 'Kashina' and 'Birds of Passage', selling nearly 50,000 copies in total. After almost 15 years, they returned with the album 'Nightwalker' in 2014, featuring a new lineup with Italian bassist Roberto Badoglio and American drummer Ray Kaczynski.
