Van der Graaf Generator is an English progressive rock band formed in 1967 in Manchester by singer-songwriters Peter Hammill and Chris Judge Smith. They were the first act signed by Charisma Records. Although they did not achieve significant commercial success in the UK, they gained popularity in Italy during the 1970s. Their 1971 album "Pawn Hearts" was particularly popular in Italy. The band disbanded in 1972 but reunited between 1975–1978 and again in 2005. Since then, they have been active with a lineup of Hammill, organist Hugh Banton, and drummer Guy Evans.
