Wolfgang Sawallisch was a German conductor and pianist, renowned for his interpretations of works by Richard Strauss and Robert Schumann. He served as music director of the Bavarian State Opera (1971–1992) and the Philadelphia Orchestra (1993–2003). Sawallisch recorded extensively for EMI, including Strauss's opera "Die Frau ohne Schatten" and Schumann's symphonies with the Staatskapelle Dresden. As a pianist, he accompanied singers such as Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. He received accolades like the Bacchetta d'Oro from Teatro alla Scala in 1993.
