The World Saxophone Quartet was an American jazz ensemble founded in 1977. The original members were Julius Hemphill, Oliver Lake, Hamiet Bluiett, and David Murray. The group was known for its innovative blend of free jazz, R&B, funk, and South African jazz. Notable albums include "Point of No Return" (1977), "W.S.Q." (1981), and "Plays Duke Ellington" (1986). In 2006, they released "Political Blues," featuring politically charged lyrics and collaborations with artists like James "Blood" Ulmer and Jamaaladeen Tacuma. The ensemble disbanded in 2016.
