Richard Merrill "Dick" Sudhalter was an American jazz cornetist, writer, and historian. Born on December 28, 1938, in Boston, Massachusetts, Sudhalter was known for his lyrical cornet playing style, influenced by musicians like Bobby Hackett and Ruby Braff. In addition to his musical career, he was a significant author; his 1974 book "Bix: Man and Legend" is considered the standard biography of jazz cornetist Bix Beiderbecke. In 1999, he published the controversial "Lost Chords: White Musicians and Their Contribution to Jazz, 1915-1945," highlighting the contributions of white musicians to jazz. Sudhalter passed away on September 19, 2008, in New York.
