Born in Chicago in 1940, he co-founded the Art Ensemble of Chicago and the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). Mitchell is known for his technical proficiency on the saxophone and innovative approach to music. His notable albums include "Sound" (1966), "Nonaah" (1977), and "Fanfare for the Warriors" (1973). Throughout his career, he collaborated with artists such as Anthony Braxton and Muhal Richard Abrams.
