Alton Ellis was a Jamaican singer-songwriter, known as the "Godfather of Rocksteady". Born in Kingston, he began his career in 1959 as part of the duo Alton & Eddy. In the mid-1960s, he transitioned to rocksteady, with his song "Girl I've Got a Date" considered one of the first in the genre. Notable albums include "Sings Rock and Soul" (1967), "Sunday Coming" (1971), and "Mr Soul of Jamaica" (1974). Ellis's music significantly influenced reggae and hip-hop, with his track "Mad Mad" being frequently sampled. In 2006, he was inducted into the International Reggae And World Music Awards Hall Of Fame.
