Álvaro Cassuto is a Portuguese composer and conductor born on November 17, 1938, in Porto. He studied in Lisbon and Berlin, earning a law degree from the University of Lisbon and later a conducting degree from the Vienna Conservatory. As a composer, he is known for his orchestral works, including "Sinfonias breves" (1959–60), where he employed integral serialism techniques. He has conducted several prominent orchestras, such as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. In 2009, the President of Portugal awarded him the title of Grand Officer of the Military Order of Saint James of the Sword to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his career.
