Anner Bylsma was a Dutch cellist born on February 17, 1934, in The Hague. He studied at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague under Carel van Leeuwen Boomkamp, earning the Prix d'excellence in 1957. In 1959, he won first prize at the Pablo Casals Competition in Mexico. From 1962 to 1968, Bylsma served as the principal cellist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. A pioneer in historically informed performance, he was the first to record Bach's solo cello suites on a period instrument in 1979. He authored "Bach, the Fencing Master," analyzing the style and aesthetics of Bach's cello suites. Bylsma passed away on July 25, 2019, in Amsterdam.
