Annette Hanshaw was an American Jazz Age singer, known as "The Personality Girl." Between 1926 and 1934, she recorded approximately 250 songs, collaborating with notable jazz musicians such as Red Nichols, Benny Goodman, and Jack Teagarden. Her relaxed style suited the jazz-influenced pop music of the late 1920s. During her career, she was considered one of the leading female jazz singers, ranking alongside Ethel Waters, Bessie Smith, and the Boswell Sisters in popularity and influence. In 1934, she chose to retire from her musical career and withdrew from public life.
