Aruán Ortiz is a Cuban pianist, violist, and composer born in Santiago de Cuba. Residing in Brooklyn, he has been an active figure in the progressive jazz and avant-garde scene in the U.S. for over 15 years. His music blends contemporary classical music, Afro-Cuban rhythms, and avant-garde improvisation. He has collaborated with notable jazz musicians such as Wadada Leo Smith, Don Byron, and Greg Osby. Significant albums include "Cub(an)ism" (2017) and "Molecular" (2020). In 2025, he received the prestigious Goddard Lieberson Fellowship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
