Ayalew Mesfin is an Ethiopian musician born in the 1940s in Woldiya, North Wollo. At age 11, he ran away to Addis Ababa to pursue a music career. In 1973, he formed the Black Lion Band, recording songs like "Hasabe" ("My Worries"). His music often addressed political and social issues, leading to his imprisonment and a ban on his music during the Derg regime. After the Derg's fall in 1991, he released the album "Peace for Ethiopia." In 1998, he moved to the United States, continuing his music career and releasing a compilation of his works in 2018.
