Barbara Hendricks is an American lyric soprano and humanitarian. Born in Arkansas, she studied chemistry and mathematics at the University of Nebraska before pursuing music. She debuted in 1974 and has since performed at major opera houses worldwide, including the Opéra National de Paris, the Metropolitan Opera, and La Scala. In addition to opera, she performs jazz and chamber music. In 1987, she was appointed UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, and in 1998, she founded the Barbara Hendricks Foundation for Peace and Reconciliation. She has received numerous awards, including the titles of Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres and Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur.
