Barre Phillips was an American jazz double bassist known for his pioneering work in free improvisation. In 1968, he released "Journal Violone," considered the first solo double bass album. He collaborated with artists like Dave Holland and John Surman. In 2022, he released "Face à Face" with György Kurtág Jr., combining double bass with electronics.
