Big Brother and the Holding Company is an American rock band formed in San Francisco in 1965. The original lineup included guitarists Sam Andrew and James Gurley, bassist Peter Albin, and drummer Dave Getz. In 1966, vocalist Janis Joplin joined the group. Their second album, "Cheap Thrills" (1968), reached number one on the Billboard Top LPs chart and featured tracks like "Piece of My Heart" and "Ball and Chain". After Joplin's departure in 1968, the band continued with various lineups, releasing albums such as "Be a Brother" (1970) and "How Hard It Is" (1971).
