Bill Dixon was an American composer and educator, born in 1925 in Nantucket, Massachusetts. He was a seminal figure in free jazz and late 20th-century contemporary music. Dixon played the trumpet, flugelhorn, and piano, often utilizing electronic effects such as delay and reverb. In 1964, he organized the "October Revolution in Jazz," the first free jazz festival of its kind. Notable albums include "Intents and Purposes" (1967), "Bill Dixon in Italy Volume One" (1980), and "Tapestries for Small Orchestra" (2009). Dixon also served as a professor of music at Bennington College, where he founded and chaired the Black Music Division. He passed away in 2010 in North Bennington, Vermont.
