Cassandra Wilson is an American jazz singer, songwriter, and producer from Jackson, Mississippi. Born on December 4, 1955, she began her career in the 1980s as a member of the M-Base collective. Her albums 'Blue Light 'Til Dawn' (1993) and 'New Moon Daughter' (1995) received widespread acclaim; the latter earned her a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance in 1997. Wilson is known for her distinctive voice and ability to blend jazz with blues, country, and folk. She has collaborated with artists such as Wynton Marsalis and Terri Lyne Carrington.
