'POLYTROPOS / OF MANY TURNS' is the latest live album from influential saxophonist and composer Steve Coleman and his band Five Elements. The recording captures two performances from a March 2024 tour in France, where Coleman, along with longtime collaborators Jonathan Finlayson (trumpet) and Sean Rickman (drums), and new member Rich Brown (bass guitar), showcase spontaneous transformations of rhythmic and tonal structures. The album exemplifies collective improvisation at its highest level, with musicians guided by a mysterious internal logic, creating continuous musical movements. Coleman, known for his visual approach to music, draws inspiration from the logical chains of amino acids, translating them into musical forms, thereby pushing the boundaries of jazz improvisation.
