This exceptional album features the world premiere recording of two masterpieces by Giuseppe Sarti (1729–1802), performed live in St. Petersburg at the Mariinsky Concert Hall in June 2011. Sarti's sacred compositions masterfully combine highly elaborate contrapuntal techniques with dramatic effects, rich and expressive orchestration, and the melodic opulence of opera. The Magnificat is scored for double orchestra and chorus, delivering extraordinary liveliness and sonic variety. In the Gloria, vocal soloists play a significant role; the aria-like movements for soloists and the long orchestral introductions at the beginning of almost every number reflect Sarti's lifelong interest in theater.
