HANNIGAN SINGS ZORN VOLUME ONE is a remarkable collaboration between soprano Barbara Hannigan and composer John Zorn. Released on August 16, 2024, this album features a challenging program of Zorn's compositions, including the long-awaited "Jumalattaret," a song cycle honoring nine Finnish goddesses from Sámi shamanism, and "Split the Lark," a tribute to American poet Emily Dickinson. The music ranges from lyrical, folk-like simplicity to complex atonal and textural pyrotechnics. As a bonus, the album includes the rare piece "Nazdar, Poupon, Nazdar," composed by Zorn around 1971 at the age of 17, an early example of his multi-layered genre blending.
