Cecil Payne was an American jazz saxophonist, renowned for his baritone saxophone performances. He began his professional career in 1946 with J.J. Johnson and later joined Dizzy Gillespie's big band, contributing to recordings like "Ow!" and "Stay On It". In 1956, he released his debut album "Patterns of Jazz". During the 1970s, he collaborated with pianist Duke Jordan on the album "Brooklyn Brothers". Throughout his career, he worked with artists such as Tadd Dameron, Illinois Jacquet, and Randy Weston. His recordings for Delmark Records in the 1990s, including albums like "Cerupa" and "Scotch and Milk", showcase his enduring influence on the jazz scene.
