Charlie Mariano was an American jazz saxophonist specializing in alto and soprano saxophones. Born in Boston in 1923, he studied at the Schillinger House of Music, now Berklee College of Music, after serving in the Army during World War II. Throughout his career, he collaborated with notable musicians such as Stan Kenton, Charles Mingus, and Eberhard Weber. Mariano was known for his interest in world music and for integrating Indian instruments like the nadaswaram into jazz. He passed away in 2009 in Cologne.
