David Oistrakh was a Soviet Russian violinist, violist, and conductor, regarded as one of the most prominent violinists of the 20th century. Born in Odessa in 1908, he studied at the Odessa Conservatory. Throughout his career, he collaborated with notable composers such as Dmitri Shostakovich and Aram Khachaturian, who dedicated their violin concertos to him. Oistrakh received numerous awards, including the Stalin Prize in 1943 and the Lenin Prize in 1960. His recordings for Melodiya and EMI remain highly esteemed. He passed away in Amsterdam in 1974.
