Dirty Beaches is the stage name of Taiwanese-born Canadian musician Alex Zhang Hungtai. The project began as a one-man band, often employing sampling and inspired by Zhang's love of hip-hop. He released several EPs and three albums on cassette labels before releasing his fourth album, 'Badlands', in March 2011. This album was nominated for the Polaris Music Prize in 2011. In 2013, he followed up with 'Drifters/Love Is the Devil', which delved further into no wave, electronic music, jazz, and ambient genres. In 2014, Zhang ended the Dirty Beaches project after releasing the instrumental album 'Stateless'.
