Arthel "Doc" Watson was an American guitarist and singer known for his contributions to folk and bluegrass music. Born in Deep Gap, North Carolina, he was blind from childhood. Watson learned to play guitar and banjo, becoming a pioneer of the flatpicking style on the acoustic guitar. Throughout his career, he released over 40 albums and won seven Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. He collaborated with his son, Merle Watson, until Merle's death in 1985. Watson was renowned for his rich baritone voice and virtuoso guitar playing, making him a significant figure in American traditional music.
