El Rego, born Théophile Do-Rego on May 3, 1936, in Porto-Novo, Benin, was a pioneering figure in Beninese funk and soul music. He began his musical career in Burkina Faso as a member of the L’Harmonie Voltaique orchestra. After returning to Benin in 1961, he formed his first band, La Filda, and in 1966 established the Commandos. Their music blended American R&B, soul, and funk with traditional African rhythms, influencing many African bands. In 2011, Daptone Records released the album "El Rego," featuring 12 of his best singles from the 1960s and 1970s. The products available from the artist El Rego include CDs.
