Emperor is a Norwegian black metal band formed in 1991 in Notodden, Norway, by guitarist and vocalist Ihsahn and guitarist Samoth. They are considered one of the most influential bands in the black metal genre. Their debut album, "In the Nightside Eclipse" (1994), is regarded as a genre classic. Subsequent albums "Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk" (1997) and "IX Equilibrium" (1999) solidified their position in the scene. Their fourth and final studio album, "Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire & Demise," was released in 2001 and was nominated for a Norwegian Grammy Award for Best Metal Album. The band has disbanded and reunited several times, with the most recent reunion occurring in 2016.
