Eugene Ormandy was a Hungarian-American conductor and violinist, renowned for his 44-year tenure as music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Born in Budapest in 1899, he studied violin at the Royal National Hungarian Academy of Music. In 1931, he became the music director of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, and in 1936, he joined the Philadelphia Orchestra, assuming the role of principal conductor in 1938. Under his leadership, the orchestra achieved three gold records and two Grammy Awards.
